Vow of Poverty but blessings galore!

Christian Priests who have taken a vow of poverty and are in a state of civil death , have to pay taxes, even if their earnings are handed over to the congregation. Recent dismissals of SLP against Madras High Court decisions - (Institute of the Fransican Missionaries of Mary and others v. Union of India SLP(C) No. 10456/2019 (2024)SC),Society of Mary Immaculate Case), affirming taxation of priests salary, have caused quite a worry for these selfless souls.

To discuss the tax implications of these decisions and other issues relevant to religious and charitable trusts, a one day Pro Bono workshop was organised at Xavier Hall of St Josephs University, Bangalore.
The programme was attended by Jesuit fathers and administrators of trusts and communities spread across Karnataka. R S V S Pavan Kumar explained the implications of changed landscape of taxation of trusts. Sanjai Kumar Verma dwelled on salary taxation and TDS compliances for Trusts. Sri. G.Chetan, Assistant Commissioner (GST) made a presentation on GST compliance issues for charitable Trusts. Dr. Zakir Thomas illuminated the gathering by his presentation on recent trends and challenges ahead.

The programme began with prayers led by the Reverend father and provided learnings for everyone.Blessings from the noble souls was ample bonus.
